Art
Art Department Alumni and Art Memorial Recognition Awards
- Amount: $100
Given to an art student or students in honor of an alumnus or special community art supporter that the Department of Art chooses to recognize. Student must have completed a minimum of 15 semester hours at 久久国产精品久久. Note: A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.
Art Department Meritorious Award
- Amount: $50
Department of Art faculty select one or more full- or part-time students who have completed a minimum of 15 semester hours at 久久国产精品久久.
Art Department Renewable Scholarship
- Amount: $300 - $500
Open to incoming first year and transfer students who have been accepted into 久久国产精品久久 and declared an Art major. Must have been a recipient of the Art Department Scholarship as an incoming first year or transfer student. Renewal applications must be made up of new work completed since previous portfolio submission.
Marie A. Cavallaro Art Scholarship
- Amount: $300
This scholarship is meant to recognize student leadership and involvement, specifically in the visual arts. The applicant must be a full time Art major, with a 3.0 or better GPA. The applicant will submit a portfolio of student work, and a personal statement describing his or her background and participation in art. The student must also provide evidence of using art in a leadership or volunteer role on campus or in the community. One letter of recommendation speaking to this leadership or volunteer activity required.
Ryan K. McDowell 3D Art Scholarship
- Amount: $300 - $500
Awarded to a junior or senior art student with a concentration in a three-dimensional art form: hot glass, sculpture, or ceramics.
The Department of Art faculty selects one art student with a 3-D concentration.
CRITERIA:
- Student must be a Junior or Senior with a major in Art and a concentration in a three-dimensional art form: hot glass, sculpture, or ceramics.
- Student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be awarded and/or maintain this scholarship
- Preference shall be given to students who demonstrate financial need. Please write a short paragraph stating why you feel you need this scholarship.
- This scholarship is renewable.
Myers Award for Photography
- Amount: $200
Intended to assist students with photography related supplies, travel or fees associated with seminars, workshops, or conferences.
CRITERIA:
- Completed or in the process of completing 2 or more photography courses at 久久国产精品久久 with a minimum 2.7 GPA. Enrolled as a full-time student
- Submits a color or black and white portfolio with a minimum of 10 images.
- Submits a written summary of what they anticipate using the funds for.
Preference given to students who have demonstrated financial need.
Walter C. Thurston Memorial Award
- Amount: $500
The Walter C. Thurston Memorial Award is sponsored annually by the 久久国产精品久久Exchange Club for a full-time art major who has completed a minimum of three photography courses at 久久国产精品久久 with a “B” average. The Department of Art faculty reviews all applicant portfolios and written comments of those students whose careers will involve photography in some manner.
The 久久国产精品久久Exchange Club, in memory of the late Mr. Thurston, who was a photographer and local businessman, sponsors the Walter C. Thurston Memorial Award annually.
CRITERIA:
- Must be a full-time junior or senior art major.
- Must have completed or in the process of completing nine (9) hours in photography at SU.
- Must have maintained a “B” average in photography.
- Must plan to use photography in future career.
- Must submit a portfolio of black & white and/or color photo images via slideroom.com (see above) demonstrating a variety of skills.
- Must submit an artist statement, also through slideroom.com.
- Must not have received the Thurston Award any previous year.
Art Department Student Assistantship Fund (Ray L. Hamilton)
- Amount: $250
This award is meant to provide financial assistance to an outstanding art major or liberal studies art major for items such as travel, room, board, and other costs incurred in pursuing study beyond traditional courses provided by the Department of Art.
CRITERIA:
- Rising junior to senior status continuing study away (ex. Internship)
- Overall grade point average of 3.0 or better
- Demonstration of “excellence” in one art track, and
- The recommendation of one Department of Art faculty member, the Director of the University Galleries, or the Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts.
ELIGIBILITY: Any full-time art major or liberal studies art major pursuing a Bachelor of Art or Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Art; and working within at least one of the academic tracks.
Because the Art Department Student Assistantship Fund is meant to “assist” an outstanding art major that meets the above criteria in pursuing study beyond that provided by the Department of Art, and outside the traditional scholarship-type awards, students eligible for consideration must be pursuing one of the following areas:
- The “Junior Year Away” program related to study at one of the out-of-state Art Institutes International programs,
- The Arts Administration internship at the national or high-level regional gallery/museum such as the National Museum, Baltimore, Maryland.
- Any academically accredited international study program
- Inter-term credit bearing courses such as ART 399 – International Field Study or courses with an international travel element.
- Study at another institution during an “inter-term” (Winter Term or Summer Session) provided that study is not within commuting distance of the student’s residence.
NOTE FROM ART DEPARTMENT: Students need to provide evidence of returning to 久久国产精品久久 and evidence of acceptance to an outside travel program before receiving the award.

Communication
The Kendall-Ford Award
Awarded to a junior Communication Major with a GPA of 3.2 or above, who has completed at least three hands-on communication courses (including writing, producing, management, etc.), and, who according to faculty, advisors and peers, plays a substantial role in student-run media organizations.
Students do not apply for this award on their own, they are nominated by faculty, advisors, or their peers. Applications can be obtained by emailing CommunicationDept@salisbury.edu. The awardee nomination/selection takes place in the spring semester.

The Robert A. Elderdice Memorial Award
- Amount: $300
The Robert A. Elderdice Memorial Award is presented annually to a promising English major in the field of American literature. This award was established by the estate of Professor Elderdice, a distinguished long-time member of 久久国产精品久久’s English Department and a great teacher of American literature. Recipients receive $300 and a certificate.
The Francis B. Fleming Scholarship Award
- Amount: $500
The Francis B. Fleming Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding performance by a graduate student in the M.A. in English Program. This award was established in honor of Francis B. Fleming who was an English faculty member from 1955-1984. Recipients receive $500 and a certificate.

Environmental Studies
The Academic Excellence Award in Environmental Studies
- Amount: No Monetary Award
The Academic Excellence Award is given to the senior in the Environmental Studies program who most embodies the pursuit of academic excellence during her or his career at 久久国产精品久久.
The Environmental Leadership Award
- Amount: No Monetary Award
The Environmental Leadership Award is given to the environmental studies student who best embodies the pursuit of service and/or activism during her or his career at 久久国产精品久久.
William Chaney Bunn Memorial Scholarship
- Amount: Up to $1,600
The William Chaney Bunn Memorial Scholarship in Environmental Studies will be awarded to a 久久国产精品久久 current undergraduate, full-time student with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. First preference to a resident of Anne Arundel County MD, then any student in Maryland. Must be an environmental studies major and demonstrate involvement in environmental activities or other organizations outside the education setting by an essay or other means. The scholarship is renewable if the recipient has a 3.0 minimum GPA for up to three times after the initial award (contingent on funding availability).
Mike Pretl Memorial Scholarship
- Amount: Amount Varies
The Mike Pretl Memorial Scholarship will provide funding to a current SU student pursuing an undergraduate degree and meeting the following criteria: full-time environmental studies major; interest in pursuing a career in environmental policy or law; and cumulative GPA 3.00 or better. This is a non-renewable scholarship.

William H. Wroten Jr. Scholarship in History
- Amount: $500
This $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a history undergraduate or graduate student who has made a significant contribution to the study of the Colonial Eastern Shore, or who has produced an exceptional work of original historical study. Established by the Class of 1959, the award recognizes the long-standing service of Dr. Wroten as Chair of the History Department. The recipient is selected by the Wroten Scholarship Committee.
CRITERIA:
- Full-time enrollment required (12+ credits per semester)
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA
- 500-word count essay

Wilcomb E. Washburn Student Prize in History
- Amount: $500
All 久久国产精品久久 undergraduate students are invited to submit historical research papers for the Wilcomb E. Washburn Student Prize in History.
The paper must be original and based upon primary research on the Chesapeake area with special emphasis on the Delmarva Peninsula prior to 1950. Resources at the Nabb Research Center must be used in the preparation of the paper. Applicant must be an undergraduate student at 久久国产精品久久 during the calendar year preceding Honors Convocation.

Wilcomb E. Washburn Delmarva History Prize
- Amount: $1500
The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at 久久国产精品久久 also offers the Wilcomb E. Washburn Delmarva History Prize for outstanding historical scholarship concerning the Delmarva Peninsula. This prize is made possible through an endowment created by the W.F. Donner Foundation in honor of the late Wilcomb E. Washburn, Ph.D., a distinguished historian of the Smithsonian Institution and resident of Somerset County, MD.
Dr. Washburn was very impressed with scholarly endeavors, in particular with primary sources and the care and preservation of original documents. Among its holdings, the Nabb Research Center holds originals and copies of the public records of the Delmarva Peninsula, the oldest continuous records in British-speaking America, going back to 1632. Dr. Washburn was quick to recognize the value of the educational nature of the Research Center which had been established.
Essays will be judged upon the following criteria:
- Any person, group of persons, organization, government agency, school (secondary or college) is eligible to apply.
- Members of the Board of Directors of the Nabb Research Center are not eligible.
- Contribution must focus on history of the Chesapeake area with special emphasis on the Delmarva Peninsula.
- Subject matter of monographs and papers must be prior to 1950.
- Applicants must display a commitment to scholarship, historical accuracy, and use of primary sources.
Examples:
Author of historical text, study of material culture, preservation of historic sites, re-creation of an historical event, exhibits at museums or historical societies, educational programs for students or adults, historical archeology, or creation of historic districts.

With the cover letter, submit a written report justifying why an award should be granted. Applicants are permitted to submit photos and and/or previously prepared materials when appropriate in addition to the essay. Applicants should describe the project's commitment to historical accuracy and innovation.

Louis “Casey” Parsons Memorial Award in History
- Amount: $400
The C. Louis “Casey” Parsons Memorial Award in History will be awarded on an annual basis in the Spring to a graduating senior in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts at 久久国产精品久久 to recognize a student’s research contribution to the history of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Maryland. Student must be in good standing at 久久国产精品久久 in Fulton School of Liberal Arts and must fulfill the following criteria:
- Full time student with a declared History major
- 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
- Has completed and written a research project on Eastern Shore history using resources in the Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History & Culture which is approved by the Chair of the History department and the Director of the Nabb Research Center.

Interdisciplinary Studies
Interdisciplinary Studies Outstanding Senior Awards
This award is given annually by the Interdisciplinary Studies Program to graduating seniors in consultation with the coordinators of the Interdisciplinary Studies track. These students will have shown the highest academic achievement and involvement in campus and/or community activities.
CRITERIA:
Award winners are selected, one from each of the Interdisciplinary Studies Tracks, by the program specialist in consultation with the Track Coordinators according to the following criteria:
- Must be graduating seniors
- Must have among the highest GPA of the graduating seniors in each IDIS Track, with a minimum 3.0 GPA required
- • Must have shown leadership in either campus activities (Greek Life, clubs, governing bodies, academic research, athletics, music performance, theatre performance, etc.) and/or community activities (volunteer, church, nonprofit, etc.)

International Studies
Justin Shen Political Science and International Studies Senior Award
As part of the Justin Y. Shen Endowment at 久久国产精品久久 there will be two awards made each spring as part of the Shen Political Science Award and the Shen International Studies Award. Each of these awards will recognize an outstanding graduating senior in their respective major of study. Award recipients must be a political science or international studies major with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. One student from each of the two majors is chosen in the spring and recognized at Honors Convocation. Award amounts will be of equal value when funding is sufficient. Modern Languages
John K. Knowles Foreign Study Scholarship
The John K. Knowles Foreign Study Scholarship was established by Dr. John Knowles (SU Spanish faculty 1971-1997) in order to expand study abroad opportunities for students studying a foreign language at SU.
An application to the John Knowles Scholarship has two goals:
- To receive funds that will help offset study abroad expenses.
- To serve as practice for more demanding grants and applications in the future.
CRITERIA:
- Students must be at the sophomore rank or above
- Be a foreign language major or minor at SU.
- Submit an application which describes their personal and academic goals and how these will be met by a study abroad experience.
- An unofficial transcript must accompany the completed application.
Students are expected to participate in Departmental activities that promote study abroad upon their return to campus. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to keep the Knowles fund alive by donating to the Knowles Scholarship Fund through the University Foundation in the future.

Guerrieri Student Union Award
- Amount: $150 check & a copy of the Harvard Dictionary of Music
Presented to honor a degree candidate music major who has demonstrated outstanding musicianship by outstanding recital performance and academic achievement.
Faculty members choose one vocalist and one instrumentalist based with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during spring semester.
Department of Music Award
- Amount: $200 check
Faculty members choose a music major with senior status and cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Student must have made some outstanding contribution in either solo or ensemble performance.
Jared Young Memorial Scholarship
- Amount: $500 - $1,000
The Jared Young Music Scholarship memorializes Jared Young, who graduated from 久久国产精品久久 in 2011 and was a gifted guitarist and musician. The recipient of this scholarship will be recommended by the adjudicators of the students who have been accepted into the music program at 久久国产精品久久 by performance. The chosen student will have exceptional talent. First preference by audition will be a guitar music major. Student must demonstrate financial need from the FAFSA. The scholarship is renewable if recipient is approved by the Co-Chair of Music and meets the criteria. Students can apply for the Jared Young Memorial Scholarship through the SU scholarship portal.
William M. Folger Scholarship
- Amount: $500
The William M. Folger Scholarship was created in the name of the Director of Choral Studies at 久久国产精品久久. An anonymous donor made the initial endowment to start the scholarship program to recognize Dr. Folger’s effort and dedication in bettering the music programs at 久久国产精品久久. At present, the Folger Scholarship, instituted in June 2005, provides a scholarship to a student participating in the University Chorale, one of five major performing ensembles in the Department of Music. The scholarship is awarded by audition by the Director of Choral Studies and with the approval of the Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts. Eligible students may be from any major of study, must participate in the University Chorale during the semester of the award, and must complete the audition process. Contact the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program for more information. Students can apply for the William M. Folger Scholarship through the SU scholarship portal.
Caroline S. Dudley Memorial Award
- Amount: $500 check
Faculty members choose a Vocal Performance Major at the level of senior class standing as the awardee of the Caroline S. Dudley Memorial Award. The award is presented during the spring semester.
Nettie C. Bentley Scholarships
- Amount: $1,000 - $1,500
The Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program offers the Nettie C. Bentley Scholarships which are available, on a competitive basis, to students who are accepted or previously enrolled as candidates for the B.A. in music at 久久国产精品久久. Scholarships are awarded annually. To qualify for consideration, applicants must have previously auditioned according to the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program requirements for the B.A. degree. Evidence of academic achievement is assessed through evaluation of applicants’ high school or college/university transcripts. The deadlines coincide with the deadline for department entrance auditions or March 15th, whichever comes first. Students may reapply annually through the SU scholarship portal.
Music Ensemble Scholarships
- Amount: Amount Varies
The Fulton School of Liberal Arts and the Department of Music offer scholarships each fall and spring semester to students wanting to have some fun singing or playing their instrument in a music ensemble. The Department of Music currently has five large ensembles to choose from and they are open to any student with prior musical experience. All majors from any discipline are eligible for these scholarships provided they agree to remain enrolled in the course and complete all requirements for the duration of the semester. Scholarships will be decided based on an audition. Students interested in applying should contact their ensemble director for additional information. Students can apply for the Music Ensemble Scholarships through the SU scholarship portal.
Robert L. Sawyer and Janet A. Walsek Scholarship
- Amount: $2,000
This scholarship was established by Robert L. Sawyer and Janet A. Walsek for students majoring in the Henson School of Science and Technology who have also made contributions to the life and activities within the Department of Music. To be considered for this scholarship students must meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled full-time in one of the following majors: biological sciences, chemistry, geoscience, mathematics, computer science, data science or physics
- Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher
- Successfully completed their first year as a major in one of the above-mentioned disciplines
- Must be a performing member of the 久久国产精品久久Symphony Orchestra, 久久国产精品久久Jazz Ensemble, or 久久国产精品久久Concert Band each semester.
Preference will be given to students recognized by the Department of Music for outstanding musicianship. This scholarship is not renewable, but students can reapply. The Department of Music scholarship committee in the Fulton School will select recipient. Students can apply for the Robert L. Sawyer and Janet A. Walsek Scholarship through the SU scholarship portal.
Earl Family Music Scholarship
- Amount: $2,000
The Earl Family Music scholarship will provide funding for an incoming first year student who has been accepted into the music program in the Fulton School and must fulfill the following:
- Preference to an incoming first year, full-time student accepted by audition as a music major; scholarship is renewable at the discretion of the selection committee.
- Demonstrate merit through performance reviews (auditions).
- Preference given to those students who choose the Music Technology Track.
This scholarship requires an audition with the Department of Music and is not automatically renewed each year, students must reapply. Contact the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program for additional details and requirement. This scholarship is awarded after the start of fall semester. SScholarship requires a separate application and audition for entrance into the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program by March 15th.

The Clark Family Music Scholarship will provide financial support for students who have been accepted into a music major in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts. It will be awarded to an incoming first year (first preference) music major who has demonstrated promise in the growth as an artist. Students must be enrolled full-time and participate in an audition with the Department of Music. This scholarship is not automatically renewed each year; students must reapply. Scholarship requires a separate application and audition for entrance into the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program by March 15th. Eligible

This scholarship will be awarded to one music major or minor who has best represented and promoted the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program. The decision as to the recipient of the award will be decided by a committee of three with representatives from: Financial Aid, the SU Foundation, and the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program Chair. This scholarship will be awarded annually for the fall semester only. The scholarship will not be renewed automatically but students may reapply each year. Students can apply for the Dr. Jessie Fleming Music Scholarship through the SU scholarship portal.
Fleming Family Music Scholarship
- Amount: $2,500
The Fleming Family Music scholarship was established to recognize the great contributions she has made to the students of 久久国产精品久久 over many years and to remind the numerous 久久国产精品久久graduates of their association with Dr. Jessie Fleming with pride and appreciation. This scholarship will be awarded to one current music major or minor who has best represented and promoted the music department. A short essay is required as part of the application process. The decision as to the recipient of the award will be decided by a committee of three with representatives from: Financial Aid, the SU Foundation, and the Music Department Chair. This scholarship will be awarded annually for the fall semester only. The scholarship will not be renewed automatically but students can reapply each year. Givens-Lowe Memorial Music Scholarship
- Amount: $1,000 - $3,000
This financial need-based scholarship is available to full time undergraduate students at the sophomore level or higher. The maximum benefit to any one student is three (3) years/six (6) academic semesters. It is renewable as long as the qualifications in making the initial award are then currently met.
An overall minimum 3.0 GPA is required to apply and the student must be enrolled in at least 3 (three) academic credit hours of music courses at 久久国产精品久久 and each semester thereafter. Organ, piano, and voice students will be given first preference. All applicants must demonstrate musical accomplishment and meet any performance standards adopted by the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance.
A written recommendation from a music faculty member will be submitted attesting to the musical abilities and talent of the applying student. If the applicant is a transfer student, a recommendation by a music faculty member from the most recent school may be deemed acceptable.
The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage musical study for majors/minors or to significantly enrich the musical study of students of any academic major/minor where the student exhibits exceptional musical talent and skill. Professional and avocational pursuits in music are deemed equally important contributions to a creative society.
Otello Meucci Memorial Music Education Scholarship
- Amount: $ varies
The Otello Meucci Memorial Music Education scholarship will provide renewable scholarship funding for students who are music education majors at 久久国产精品久久. Students must be enrolled full time and preference will be given to those students with financial need from FAFSA. An audition, interview and resume will be required. Contact the Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program website for more details on the application process and submission of all required items.
The scholarship can be renewed if criteria are met and recipients continue in the professional music education program.

The Philosophy faculty choose the recipient of the Distinguished Student Award in Philosophy each May.

Political Science
Henry H. “Buddy” Hanna Memorial Award
The Henry H. “Buddy” Hanna Memorial Award supports 久久国产精品久久 students working as legislative interns in the Maryland General Assembly each spring. Established by Henry H. Hanna III and his wife Dara, the scholarship helps students develop their passion for government, politics, and community affairs.
D. Page Elmore Legislative Memorial Award
The D. Page Elmore Legislative Memorial Award supports 久久国产精品久久 students working as legislative interns in the Maryland General Assembly. Carolyn Elmore established the award to honor the memory of the late Maryland Delegate D. Page Elmore and to encourage public service among the next generation of civic leaders.

Paul Hishmeh Scholarship
- Amount: $1,300
Funding for the Paul Hishmeh scholarship comes from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. To be considered for this scholarship the student must be a full-time junior or senior grade level with a Political Science major and a resident of Wicomico County, MD. If there are no eligible recipients from Wicomico County, other MD counties may be considered. This scholarship is non-renewable.
Victor H. Laws Jr. Scholarship
- Amount: Up to $10,000
The Victor H. Laws Jr. Scholarship will provide financial support for one or more deserving full-time enrolled, pre-law students, with preference given to students from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better is required to receive and retain this scholarship. The scholarship can be renewed as long as funding is available, and requirements are met with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and a pre-law major.

The William and Eva Anderson Award in Applied Psychology
- Amount: $400
The William and Eva Anderson Award in Applied Psychology is an endowed award in the amount of $400 presented to an outstanding graduating psychology major who is pursuing graduate study in an applied psychology field such as clinical or forensic psychology, educational psychology, human resources, industrial/organizational psychology, or community psychology.
The Psychology Department Award
- Amount: $100
The Psychology Department Award is presented annually for academic achievement and outstanding contributions to the Psychology Department. The honorees receive $100 and a decorative certificate, suitable for framing, recognizing their achievement.

Tony Topolski Memorial Scholarship
Established through the generosity of friends and family to honor the memory of Tony Topolski, this scholarship gives recognition to his dedication to life-long study of social concerns and his personal commitment to the pursuit of social justice. The Tony Topolski Scholarship shall be awarded annually to students with advanced class standing who major in Sociology and who indicate a strong commitment to the pursuit of justice and social change.
