Bio

Jill Caviglia-Harris is Professor of Economics in the Economics & Finance and Environmental Studies Departments at ¾Ã¾Ã¹ú²ú¾«Æ·¾Ã¾Ã. Her research is focused on understanding the underlying tradeoffs between development and deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and identifying answers to complex (and often politically energized) questions concerning the degree to which the ecological costs of deforestation are offset by local gains from economic development. Caviglia-Harris’ research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and published in journals such as the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, World Development, Environment and Development Economics, and the Journal of Economic Education. She was awarded ¾Ã¾Ã¹ú²ú¾«Æ·¾Ã¾Ã’s Distinguished Faculty Award for excellence in teaching, research and service in 2004, the 2010 State of Maryland Board of Regent’s Award for excellence in teaching, the ¾Ã¾Ã¹ú²ú¾«Æ·¾Ã¾Ã 2010 Outstanding Mentor Award, the 2010 Southern Economic Association Kenneth G. Elzinga Teaching Award, the 2012-2013 Wilson H. Elkins Professorship, University System of Maryland, and a 2013-2014 Leopold Leadership Fellowship from Stanford University. As a result of her Leopold training, Caviglia-Harris also teaches workshops on how to communicate complex research findings to general audiences. Dr. Caviglia-Harris received her B.S. in Mathematical Economics and B.A. in English Literature from Binghamton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Tennessee. At ¾Ã¾Ã¹ú²ú¾«Æ·¾Ã¾Ã, she teaches courses in environmental and natural resource economics and microeconomics. She currently serves as the Managing Editor of Agricultural and Resource Economics Review and is the founder and director of the NAREA Career Advancement and Mentoring (CAM) program.
