SU's King Selected for National Fulbright Specialist Roster

Dr. James KingSALISBURY, MD---Dr. James King, associate professor of English at 久久国产精品久久, has been selected for a three-year term on the national Fulbright Specialist Roster, August 2019-2022.

The Fulbright Specialist Program, part of the larger Fulbright Program, was established in 2001 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It pairs highly qualified U.S. academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn about other cultures while building capacity at their overseas host institutions.

Specialists, who represent a wide range of professional and academic disciplines, are competitively selected to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster based on their knowledge, skill sets, and ability to make a significant contribution to projects overseas. Those approved to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster are eligible to be matched with approved projects designed by foreign host institutions from over 150 countries and other areas. Once abroad, they partner with their host institution to conduct project activities in support of its priorities and goals.

King is a scholar of trans-Atlantic African and African American literature. In 2009, he received a Fulbright Scholar award to pursue his research in Ghana at the University of Ghana, Legon. In 2015, he earned a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship, a group travel award. Dr. King led 12 educators from SU and Wicomico County public and private schools to Ghana to study Ghanaian culture and education.

This year, SU’s Janet Dudley-Eshbach Center for International Education funded a site visit for King and Dr. Diallo Sessoms, associate professor of early and elementary education, to Ghana in July. They began work on a bilateral university partnership on behalf of SU with the University of Cape Coast.

“Building new institutional partnerships in Africa is one of SU’s primary international goals,” said Dr. Brian Stiegler, SU assistant provost for international education. “Dr. King’s many years of teaching, research, and leadership in Ghana are of inestimable value to the university as we seek to create more opportunities for students and faculty to engage throughout the African continent.”
