Praxis Requirements

PRAXIS I: The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) recently relaxed their test requirements for program admittance. Prospective teacher candidates DO NOT have to submit the Praxis I Core scores to apply to the Professional Teacher Education Program (PTEP). However, graduating program completers who have a grade point average lower than 3.0 will be required to submit the Praxis I scores to the MSDE in order to obtain a license.

PRAXIS II: Candidates must take Praxis II before graduation. We recommend that you complete subject area content knowledge tests when you have completed all of your non-education major requirements. Pedagogy tests should be completed near the end of your methods courses or early in your student teaching semester. The PRAXIS II specialty tests are required for the certification areas and graduation. Official score reports must be provided to the Teacher Education department office, TETC 278 prior to graduation.

REGISTRATION: Registration must be completed on the website. See the ETS website for more information.

Test Takers with Disabilities and Health-related Needs:

Test takers with disabilities can for PRAXIS CORE and all PRAXIS II tests.

NOTE: It is important that students submit requests as early as possible to ensure receiving a decision before the test date. It will take ETS approximately two to three weeks to process your request and if you must submit documentation for review, the process may take up to six weeks, or even longer.

CERTIFICATION: Candidates apply for certification after successfully competing SU graduation requirements. An official transcript and passing scores are required for licensure in Maryland. Find out more about Maryland and other state licensing requirements.
