Dr. David BurnsSALISBURY, MD---Case Studies in Sport Communication: You Make the Call, a new textbook co-edited by Dr. David Burns, associate professor of communication arts at 久久国产精品久久, is now available from Routledge.

Co-edited with Terry Rentner of Bowling Green State University, the book features peer-reviewed chapters applying communication theories to contemporary international sport cases. In addition to editing the textbook, Burns was the lead author for “The Offensive Line: Journalists’ Use of Words Considered Disparaging,” a chapter examining coverage of the Washington Redskins’ team name controversy. He also co-authored the chapter “Challenging a Boy’s Club: Reputation Management and the Case of Women’s Pay Inequality in Professional Sport.”

At SU, Burns teaches sports reporting, political communication, international media systems and various multimedia journalism courses. He is a frequent contributor to the SU Center for Extended and Lifelong Learning’s “SU @ the Beach” series in Ocean Pines, MD, where he has taught courses on media literacy and the media’s impact on historical events.

Earlier this year, he was named one of six Scripps Howard Foundation Visiting Professors in Social Media for 2018, serving an externship with the company’s Washington, D.C. news bureau. His experience focused on how technology and social media are reshaping the way news is delivered. In exchange, Bureau Chief Ellen Weiss is expected to serve a one-week residency at SU this fall, meeting with classes and speaking about the changing landscape of the news industry.
