Special USM Regents Committee Meeting to Focus on UMBI May 7

ADELPHI, MD---A special committee of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents invites individuals to sign up to speak at a public meeting focused on the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI). Speakers should address the mission and organization of UMBI and options to enhance the institution’s effectiveness. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 pm Thursday, May 7, in the USM Office at 3300 Metzerott Road in Adelphi.

Clifford Kendall, chair of the USM Board of Regents, in March appointed the special committee to review UMBI’s mission and organization. Based on input from many sources—including the individuals who speak at the May 7 meeting—the committee will develop recommendations for maximizing the return on the state’s investment in UMBI.  Jennie Hunter-Cevera will step down from the UMBI presidency June 30, offering this opportunity to study UMBI’s current mission as well as consider alternative organizational options.

Established in 1985, UMBI is one of USM’s 13 institutions. UMBI scientists conduct groundbreaking research in key areas of biotechnology, generate innovative solutions to practical problems, and develop new technologies for commercial application. The institute has four research centers, two in Baltimore and one each in Rockville and College Park.
